From the article:

Parents can help their school-age children learn and develop, but parents are often very busy. They may be working two jobs or trying to find a job, going to school, or taking care of other family members.

No matter how busy parents are, there are things they can do to help their children. Parents of first- and second-graders in the School Transition Study research project have discovered creative ways to stay involved in their children’s learning and development. Researchers conducting the survey learned important and useful tips to share with busy parents everywhere.

Use Your Time Well

  • Organize your time. One single parent of four who is going back to school tries hard to organize her class schedule so that she has time with her children. She is able to be home with them in the afternoons on most school days. In another family where the mother and father both work full time, they are able to organize their work schedules so that one of the parents is always at home with the children. One day a week after school, the children walk to their mother’s workplace where they wait a short time with her until their father picks them up.
  • Do a few things at once. One father arranges to do quiet household chores right beside his daughter who does her homework at the kitchen table. Then the father is there to answer questions. Another mother has her daughter start her homework in the family’s car while they are waiting for her older brother to get out of school. The car is a quiet place where they can talk together.
  • Make daily routines a time for learning. When one mother walks her girls to school, she uses the time to talk about the unsafe parts of the neighborhood and how the girls can protect themselves. Children are learning all the time, but when you talk to them like this, it can help even more with their learning.
  • Find other people to help. One single parent who cannot be home in the afternoon or evening has the babysitter help the children with homework. Another single parent who works two jobs during the summer arranges for her son to get taken to his neighborhood summer program every morning by his grandfather, who lives nearby. When the program is over, the mother’s friend takes the child to football practice and then back home, where the mother serves everyone a late dinner. As a busy parent, you can’t do everything yourself. One important thing you can do is be the manager, and make arrangements for other people to help.

From the article:

Cleaning is the most time consuming job in house keeping. Worse of all, some stains are hard to clean out. Even if you are spending all your efforts or energy, you may not clean them probably. So how to combat with all those difficulties and save your time on these cleaning tasks? Do It Yourself.com has some (well over 150) tips, tricks and how-to on cleaning stains, items and rooms. Just love the site and those information – the best ones in my opinion maybe the Chewing Gum Removal Tips (I tried it and it works nicely), How to Clean Soy Stains, Lipstick Stain Removal, Kitchen Cleaning Tips etc…

Crayon Stain Removal Hints
Crayons are resistant to water and any water soluble cleaner. In fact, water tends to spread crayon stains making the condition even worse. Therefore, other means, such as “mechanical” or “solvency” must be used to remove the crayon. Immediate heat, or “wet” solvency treatment may spread and set these stains. For the best chances of removal, please follow these steps:

  1. Mechanical (where applicable) Carefully scrape up (with the edge of a butter knife) or lift off as much solid “crayon” matter as possible. Be careful not to spread the stain with this physical removal.
  2. Next, place a tray full of ice cubes into a zipper type freezer bag and rest it over an affected area for several minutes. As the cold makes the crayon more brittle, use the butter knife once again to scrape off any further residue. If the area is larger than ice bag, then use the same procedure systematically until entire area is treated.
  3. Steps #1 & #2 are the “scraping process”. (to be used again later on)
  4. After this “cold” method has removed as much of the crayon as possible, you should then dry these “warm-hot” methods.
  5. First, use your hair dryer (on “HI” setting) to soften the crayon. Once again, carefully scrape up (with the edge of a butter knife or piece of cardboard) as much solid “crayon” matter as possible OR place a very absorbent material, such as a “thick” paper towel or napkin over affect area. Take a ‘warm-hot’ iron and apply over this covering. Hopefully the crayon will either soften so you can repeat step 1 or liquefy the crayon so it will be absorbed up into material.
  6. Pre-Soak stain in isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Allow to stand about 30 minutes. Agitate with a scrub brush. Rinse thoroughly with water. Once satisfied with results, allow surface to completely dry.

Need Some Help Organizing Your Attic?

Attics can become disorganized in a hurry since most people don’t go into their attic on a regular basis. So chances are if you have an attic it’s unorganized. We found this article that we hope will help get your attic organized and easier to use. Good luck!

From the article:

Assess the clutter.
Start by creating three categories: keep, donate, and toss. As you work your way through the items in the attic, assign each one to a category. If you rarely use a piece, it’s probably a good candidate to either donate or toss.

Edit the belongings you’re keeping.
Winnow the keep pile even further, creating new categories, such as out-of-season clothing, tax returns, etc. Allot each category a location: Tax returns might be assigned to a plastic storage box placed in a corner of the attic; sporting equipment might be sent downstairs to a wall cabinet or a bin in the garage.

Hang items to save space.
Use hooks and pegs to bring order to disorder. Consider hanging fire extinguishers, fishing rods, and anything else you’d like to get off the floor.

Take care of your pantry
If you’re like me, you tend to buy things on sale or in bulk, thinking that you might use them again, but instead they just stay in your pantry. Create a meal plan, and try to use up those tomato cans, taco shells, etc.

Say good bye to old products
Go through your cupboards, cabinets, bathroom cabinets, etc. and throw away all the unused cleaners, toiletries, make up, lotions, potions, and other stuff. Swear that you won’t buy another one until you completely use the one you have.

Organize your office drawer
Throw away rubber bands, notepads, broken pencils, notes, etc. Then clean and organize it.

From the article:

Presort the Family Laundry
Clean laundry is only half the battle―it still needs to be sorted and put away. Save those steps by keeping washer-and-dryer-safe mesh bags (27-by-36-inch mesh bag, $8, stacksandstacks.com) in each kid’s room―one for lights, one for darks. Throw the bags directly into the washing machine and dryer, then hand them back to the kids. If they’re old enough, they can do their own folding.

Make a Quick Breakfast
Put all your fruit, milk, silken tofu, or yogurt in the blender pitcher and store the pitcher in the refrigerator overnight. (You can even prechop a banana. It will brown, but that will not affect the flavor of the shake.) In the morning, set it on the blender and press the button.

Put the Kids to Work
Tired of hearing “What’s for dinner?” and “That again?” Turn over the role of meal planner and cook to your family. Ask each person to choose a night that suits his or her schedule (some family members may need to make a few meals each week), fill in a dinner menu, and add the needed ingredients to the grocery list. Make the rules simple: a different menu every night, and only one pasta dish per week. Everyone’s food issues (allergies, picky taste buds) must be addressed. Every menu must be healthy and include vegetables. Include a dish-duty sign-up, too.

Squeeze Now, Use Later
If you have leftover lemons and limes from a cocktail party, squeeze them and freeze the juice in an ice-cube tray. Once they’re frozen, store the cubes in zippered plastic bags and use them for recipes that call for fresh lemon or lime juice. (One cube equals about one tablespoon of juice.)

From the article:

Divide Your Workspace Into Zones
Organization expert Peter Walsh suggests that every professional first ask themselves, What do I want from my office space, and is it meeting my needs? After establishing how you want and need to use the space, set up zones for your daily functions. You may require a workspace for your computer, a library area for your research, a storage area for supplies and a filing area for your archives. This will provide a foundation for a more efficient use of space.

Establish Limits
“The issue isn’t space; it’s too much stuff,” Walsh says. Set limits on the amount of stuff you’ll tolerate from the beginning. Allow yourself one bookshelf. When it’s full, give away one book for every new one that you add to maintain that limit. The same goes for filing. When the cabinet becomes loaded, it’s time to de-file, tossing some of the paperwork you no longer need. The long-term upkeep will be just as important as your original organization plan.

Sort Your Catch-All Drawer
“Most people throw things into a desk drawer to get them out of sight,” says Jane Brown, founder of organization and design firm Jane Brown Interiors. After time, however, they have no idea what’s in that drawer and become anxious even opening it. Brown suggests using drawer dividers to give everything a place, like compartments for paperclips and rubber bands. Then go through the drawer every six weeks and clear out anything that is out of place or isn’t being used. And put this task on your calendar, Brown warns, so you that you keep the appointment.
